Seeking Comic Book Artists

In Blog by Adron0 Comments

Hey there, I’m Adron Buske, a comics writer and creator, of the “indie” variety. My work includes the five-story Vital Signs Anthology, steampunk/fantasy series Amby Verce & The Ascenders, (former web series) Loop & Hoodie and the fantasy one-shot Good Intentions.

Why work with me?

I’m professional, dependable and serious about my craft. I write and work across a variety of genres. I provide well constructed, detailed comic scripts (samples available on request) and will work closely with you on development and layouts. I make a point of including diversity in my comic book casts. I want to produce work that not only serves my needs as a creator, but also provides you with quality portfolio additions and stories you can be proud to share and put on your bookshelf.

I write across a wide range of genres and styles, but right now I’m specifically looking for artists who would match up nicely with the following types of projects:

  • Action / Noir
  • Gothic / Horror
  • Fantasy & Sci-Fi
  • Kid-friendly animated styles
  • Whimsical illustrated storybooks
  • “Indie” dramatic (non-genre/slice of life)

Paid, Trade, or Creative Team

Now, before anyone decries “collaboration” as free-work, let’s clarify some things, principally that I WILL PAY ARTISTS TO WORK ON MY PROJECTS.

There are a number of ways we can produce comics together, and they fall into 3 categories:

PAID

As stated above, I will pay artists to work on my books/projects. As a freelance professional (in the graphic design, web development and marketing industries) I understand the value of your time, effort and skills. I want to work with quality established and up-and-coming artists, and pay page-rate for your work on my projects. Generally, pricing is determined by the artist based on skill and experience levels.

Keep in mind, I’m a self-employed indie creator, so I have budget limitations to consider. I’d love to hire working professional artists at their full pro rates, but for the time being I must work within more modest means. If you’re willing to negotiate rates with me, that’s awesome, but I’m not going to try and coerce anyone into working for less than they feel they’re worth.

NOTE: These paid projects are Work-for-Hire, which means I retain full ownership of the property and control of how it is utilized (unless otherwise agreed upon). This also means that, as I will pay for all physical production and distribution, any and all proceeds from the project go to me – unless otherwise negotiated.

TRADE

In some instances, I can offer a trade of services in exchange for your artistic contributions, or in addition to monetary compensation. As a freelance professional and small business owner, I can provide the following services on a production hour value versus page rate exchange. Hourly rates available on request per our discussions.

Services:

  • Graphic design for web/social media/advertising
  • Website design
  • Website development (static sites, WordPress sites, landing pages)
  • Graphic design for print – advertising, documents, business cards, publishing layouts
  • Pre-press for comics, graphic novels and illustrated books
  • Lettering for comics/graphic novels
  • Photography* – professional and creative head shots, cosplay, fashion, product/retail photography

* Photography projects obviously restricted to in-person, local artists in the St. Louis area, or that I can meet up with at conventions. Also note: I do NOT do weddings or family portraits.

NOTE: These paid projects are Work-for-Hire, which means I retain full ownership of the property and control of how it is utilized (unless otherwise agreed upon). This also means that, as I will pay for all physical production and distribution, any and all proceeds from the project go to me – unless otherwise negotiated.

CREATIVE TEAM

In some specific instances, if a particular combo of creatives have worked together successfully on several projects, we may create and develop a property together. This means joint ownership of the project/property, control of usage, licensing and distribution and shared profits. With divided stakes in the property, these projects are not work-for-hire, and are unpaid (upfront). I typically do not have a problem fronting the cost of physical product production and distribution, provided my expenses are recouped from initial sales.
