Hustler Hollywood Valentine’s Day Gift Guide 2011
It’s a pretty nice vote of confidence when a client comes back to you four times for unique, custom creative work. At The Point in St. Louis, we’ve developed a really nice relationship with retail chain Hustler Hollywood that’s been very effective for both parties. We’ve done 3 previous incarnations of the holiday gift guide for them (Holiday 2008, Valentine’s 2009, Holiday 2009), each project growing in scope and scale a little, in both photographic and design execution.

One of my favorite work projects in awhile is the “Save Our City” promotion for 105.7 the Point and Shapiro Metal Supply. I’d been looking for a creative project for our video team that would break away a bit from the usual documentary style of our productions.
Shapiro didn’t lend itself easily to typical promo ideas outside of your basic radio spots. What can you do to make a metal supply yard exciting for a male 18-34 demographic?

Last week, under a serious short-term deadline, I produced another digital catalog for St. Louis retail store Hustler Hollywood, in conjunction with a promotion on 105.7 the Point. You can view the Flash catalog here (pretty SFW, unless your workplace is really prudish).
This was definitely a “so many irons” project – I contacted models, arranged the shoot, did all the photography, performed all post-production on the photos, designed the catalog and set up the Flash interface.

Back in July, Emmis Communications launched a new Environmentally-mined lifestyle website – EcoLifeSTL.com. The mission statement:
EcoLifeSTL.com is a Green-lifestyle portal focused on promoting sustainability and environmental awareness in the St. Louis community. Our aim is to bring the green-lifestyle message to both the average consumer – new to eco commitment and wanting to learn, and to aid and connect those actively pursuing a sustainable lifestyle. As a gathering place for green-minded individuals, companies and organizations, we facilitate connection, education and cooperation in St. Louis’ eco-lifestyle.
EcoLife is Emmis St. Louis’ first truly web-only brand (the general focus usually being radio stations and their online brand-extensions). The Emmis team perceived that while the Green movement is alive in the StL, and there are many small sites addressing various sustainable businesses and topics, there wasn’t a hub – a natural starting place for the St. Louisan looking to go Green. So that’s what we set out to create.

This is a pretty big jump from my Mac Mini, which is 4 processors back (G4-G5-Core Duo-Core 2 Duo) and feeling the strain of heavy programs like Photoshop CS2, Flash 8 and Dreamweaver 8 (and I tend to run these and other programs all at the same time).
The thing, though, is that I bought this machine primarily for writing. Some time ago, I started clearing the spare room first used for video games and random storage to create a writing room. I wanted a separate space from the office, where the Mini is and where we do all of our general computer stuff, plus my freelance design. It’s also where I practice and record music, my (seldom used) drawing table is in there, and a ton of books, files and other who’sits and what’sits live there, too. It’s a cluttered space, and I wanted to escape that to some degree to write. Plus, having the second machine in it’s own space allows Wendy and I to both get online and do our stuff at the same time, instead of hovering over the other, waiting for them to log off.
